Mitre Peak reflected in the water of Milford Sound, a fjord in the southern part of New Zealand. Notice the U-shaped glacial valley to the left of the peak.
The Mont Blanc seen through the Chavannes Valley, near the Petit St.
Bernard pass (French-Italian border). The rocks in the foreground are
mainly constituted by sediments that were deposited in the Mesozoic in
a basin located to the south of the European plate sensu stricto, of
which the Mont Blanc is part. Due to the convergence between the
African and European plates, this basin was uplifted and became part of
the Alpine chain.
